Ch. 1

One of the main characters of this following story I’ve known forever. My name’s Hayley and I’ve been best friends with Joel Madden since we were born; I’m not kidding either. We were born a week apart, him along with his twin March 11 and me March 18. I should probably give you some back-story on our relationship first, so here goes.

Our parents lived next to each other for 5 years before we were born. They were friends; therefore, we became friends too. Joel and his brother Benji were the only people I knew when we started school. We added more people to our circle of friends but the three of us were always the closest.

At our 14th birthday party in a game of truth or dare we were dared by our friend Allie to kiss, it was both of our first kisses. Neither one of us thought much about it after that, well, at least until we were sixteen. The day after my 16th birthday Joel asked me out.

We had been together for almost 2 ½ years when I started college. Joel, Benji, and their band Good Charlotte moved to Annapolis to try and get something going. Even though it wasn’t that far, it was still the first time we were separated for periods of time. Three days after our 4-year anniversary Good Charlotte got the news that they were signed to Epic records. In April they had to move to L.A. to record their debut album. Joel and I decided to take a break from our relationship while he was in California and I was at college. We still kept in touch with each other. They released their CD in the middle of September. I was so excited for them.

It’s been two years since they released that CD and they’re getting ready to release their second. I haven’t talked to Joel in a year-and-a-half. I don’t know how it happened but I guess he got busy with the band and touring and I got busy with school and graduation and my new boyfriend of 6 months Ryan. That’s why the next few events of my life changed the way I lived my life.

“Hello?” I asked.

“Hi, can I talk to Hayley?” the voice on the other side asked.

“Yeah, this is she. Who’s this?”

“ It’s Joel.”

“Joel?” I asked in surprise.

“Yeah, sorry I haven’t called you a long time.”

“Oh my gosh. It’s ok, I haven’t tried calling you either.”

“I, uh, I got your number from my mom today. We’re in town for a couple of days before our CD release. I was wondering if you wanted to get together and talk?”

“Sure that would be great. Do you want to come over to my place today?”

“Yeah, that would be great,” he said before I told him where I lived and we agreed on a time for him to come over.

I got up and headed towards the door. I was so nervous to see Joel again; it was weird because he was one of my best friends in the entire world.

“Hey,” I said opening the door.

“Hey Hayley.”

“Come in, come in,” I said as he came in and we hugged.

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too Joel,” I said as we walked into the living room and sat down on the couch.

“So what have you been up to lately?”

“I graduated college in May.”

“Really? Why didn’t I know?”

“I gave an invitation to your mom, but she said you guys were going to be in Europe then,” I said.

“Oh, yeah, we were. I forgot about that, we were there for a couple weeks recording. It’s too bad I couldn’t have been there.”

“It’s ok. I forgive you, I understand you’re busy.”

“Are you sure? I feel bad about missing your graduation.”

“It’s ok Joel, really, don’t feel bad.”

“Ok, I’ll try,” Joel said as my cell phone rang.

“Oh, sorry, hold on,” I said answering it. “Hello? Hey, can I call you back later, I have company…an old friend from high school…yeah, I’ll call you later, bye. Sorry about that, I didn’t think anyone would call now.”

“That’s ok, if you don’t mind me asking, who was it?” Joel asked.

“It was my boyfriend Ryan.”

“Oh, you have a boyfriend. I didn’t expect that.”

“Yeah, we met at work.”

“Where do you work?”

“At the music store in the mall,” I said.

“Cool. How long have you been together?”

“Six months.”

“Oh. Um, wow. This kinda complicates what I was going to ask you then.”

“What were you going to ask me?”

“I was going to ask if you wanted to be my date to our record release party in New York.”

“Wow, Joel. I don’t know what to say. That would be awesome to go with you to New York.”

“So you’d go with me? Even though you have a boyfriend?”

“Yeah, I’d love to go with you. You’re one of my best friends, plus I’d love to hang out with all the guys again.”

“Wow, I can’t believe it. I’m glad you want to come.”

“Of course I do. I’ve heard your new single and it’s really cool.”

“Thanks, I wish I had a copy of the CD so you could hear it all.”

“You don’t have one with you at all?” I asked.

“I don’t know. I might have one in my suitcase or my backpack, but I’m not sure. I’ll have to get back to you with that.”

“Ok, sounds good.”

“Yeah. I really hate to cut our time together, but I have to go. I’ll call you later and give you the details about NY,” Joel said.

“Ok, I’ll talk to you later then,” I said walking Joel to the door and giving him a hug before he left.

About a half hour after Joel left there was a knock at the door. I didn’t know who it would be, I wasn’t expecting anyone.

“Hey Ryan,” I said opening the door.

“Hey, I know you said you had company and that you’d call me later but I thought I’d drop by.”

“That’s cool. I’m all alone now, c’mon in,” I said as we walked to the living room.

“So who was your visitor?” Ryan asked.

“Your old boyfriend of 4 years?”

“Yeah, but he’s so much more than that. He’s one of my best friends.”

“I know, but he was still your boyfriend. He was your first for everything right?”

“Yes, he was.”

“So why is he in town?” Ryan asked.

“He’s in town for a couple days before they head to New York for their record release party.”

“That’s cool. It’s good they get to come home before they release their record.”

“Yeah it is. I have something I need to talk to you about,” I started.

“Ok, what?”

“Joel asked me to go to New York with him to the record release party.”

“Oh, um what did you tell him?” Ryan asked.

“I told him I’d go with him.”

“I see. Does he know you have a boyfriend?”

“Yeah, I told him about you after you called.”

“Ok, um, you’re gonna have to take off work to go,” Ryan said.

“I know. I’m going to talk to Susan about that tomorrow when I go in.”

“Oh, ok.”

“Ryan, don’t worry. Nothing’s going to happen. You know all the guys in the band are my best friends. I haven’t hung out with them in forever. This will be a fun trip.”

“I know, I shouldn’t worry. I trust you. Do you still love him?”

“Yeah, I’ve loved him in one way or another my entire life. But am I still in love with him, I don’t know. It doesn’t matter now though, I’m with you.”

“I guess I understand, you’ve known him forever. I just don’t want to lose you to him. Especially after you haven’t talked to him in a year-and-a-half.”

“Don’t worry, nothing’s going to change between us,” I said as the doorbell rang yet again. “Man, I’m popular today.”

“Hey Hayley, I’m back,” Joel said as I opened the door. “I had to bring Benji over. He wanted to see you.”

“Hayley!” Benji shouted as he picked me up and hugged me.

“It’s good to see you too Benj,” I said as he put me down. “C’mon in guys.”

“Joel told me he came to see you and I was jealous that I didn’t get to come see you too, so I made him bring me over. Oh who’s that?” Benji said pointing to Ryan.

“Guys, that’s my boyfriend Ryan. Ryan, this is Benji and that’s Joel,” I said introducing everyone as they exchanged hello’s.

“Hayley, I think I’m gonna go. Give me a call later,” Ryan said heading to the door. “It was nice meeting you guys.”

“Ok, bye,” I said walking him to the door.

“Wow, so you have a boyfriend?” Benji said.

“Yeah, Joel didn’t tell you?”

“No, he didn’t,” Benji said looking at Joel.

“I didn’t think it was important. She agreed to come to NY with us,” Joel said shrugging.

“Yeah, I guess it doesn’t matter,” I said. “So Benji do you have a date for the release party?”

“No, I don’t.”

“You should ask Allie,” I said.

“Allie? Our friend from school?” He asked.

“Duh, what other Allie is there? She lives upstairs.”

“Really? Are you two still best friends?” Benji asked.

“Yeah, totally.”

“Then why don’t you live together?” Joel asked.

“Well, she used to live with her boyfriend. But they broke up and he moved out and I was already living

“Cool, we should go see her,” Benji said.

“Ok, let’s go,” I said as we left my apartment and headed upstairs.

“Does she have a boyfriend?” Benji asked.

“No, she doesn’t.”

“Allie, are you there?” I yelled as I knocked on the door and motioned for the guys to stay back for a second.

“Yeah, just a second Hayley,” she yelled back. “Hey, what’s up?”

“Not much, just came to see you.”

“Cool, c’mon in.”

“Ok, but I brought a couple of people with me,” I said motioning them to come to the door.

“Benji! Joel!” Allie exclaimed as she saw them. “What are you guys doing here?”

“We’re in town for a couple of days,” Benji said as we all went inside and Allie hugged the two boys.

“Oh man, it seems like forever since I’ve seen you guys,” Allie said.

“Yeah, well, we’ve been just a tiny bit busy,” Benji said jokingly.

“Well, I’m glad you’re here now.”

“Me too. Actually we came to ask you something,” Benji said.

“Ooo, what? What?” Allie asked.

“Well, we’re having a record release party in New York and I was wondering if you wanted to be my date?” Benji

“Seriously?” she asked.

“Yes! But what about Hayley?”

“She’s gonna be my date,” Joel said.

“Really? You’re going to?” Allie asked looking at me as I nodded my head yes. “Awesome, it will almost be like
senior prom. The four of us going together.”

“I guess it will, won’t it?” Benji said.

“This will be so much fun. I’ve never been to New York before,” Allie said.

“It’s a cool place. But ladies, we’ve got to be going now. We’ll call you later,” Benji said as him and Joel
left Allie’s apartment.

“Wow, um, that was weird seeing them again. How’d they know where we lived?” Allie asked.

“Joel got my number from his mom and he called and I told him where I lived. He came over, then left, brought
Benji over and then I suggested we come see you.”

“And now we’re going to New York with them. Does Ryan know you’re going to NY with the love of your life?”

“Yes, he knows I’m going to New York with Joel. But we’re just friends now, Al,” I said.

“Ok, but I saw the way the two of you were looking at each other. It’s the same way you would look at each other
when you were dating.”

“Whatever. I’m with Ryan now.”

“So? Do you love Ryan?”

“Not yet, but I really like him,” I said.

“Ok, because I know that you still love Joel and that you always will. No matter what.”

“Yeah, I will always love him, but I don’t know if I’m still in love with him.”

“Alright, whatever you say,” Allie said.

“Well, I’ve got to go. I’m supposed to call Ryan. I’ll talk to you later,” I said.

“Ok, see ya,” Allie said as I left and went downstairs to call Ryan.

“Hello,” Ryan said answering the phone.

“Hey Ryan.”

“Hey Hayley. What’s up?”

“Not much. I was wondering if you wanted to go out to dinner so we could talk?”

“Sure, I’ll come pick you up.”

“Ok, see ya then.”

“Bye,” Ryan said as we hung up.

About an hour later Ryan to pick me up and we went to our favorite restaurant in town to have dinner.

“So, did you have fun hanging out with the rock stars this afternoon?” Ryan asked.

“Be nice. I didn’t know they were coming over. They didn’t stay that long anyway. We went upstairs to see Allie

“I’m sorry, I’ll try. I forgot they know Allie too.”

“It’s ok. And Allie’s coming to New York too,” I said.

“That’s cool. I’m glad you’ll have her there while they have to do band stuff.”

“Yeah, that way I won’t be bored and alone.”

“I want you to share a hotel room with her too.”

“What? You don’t want me to stay in a room with a boy? Afraid he’ll take advantage of me?” I teased.

“Haha. You’re funny. I’d just rather you stay with Allie.”

“I understand.”

We finished up our dinner and then we went back to my place to watch a movie before Ryan went home for the

Ch. 2

Before we left for New York we went and visited my parents and Benji and Joel’s mom. It had been awhile since Allie and I had seen their mom. We then got on a plane for NY.

“Welcome to New York ladies,” Joel said as we got off the plane.

“Wow, I’m so impressed by the airport,” I said.

“Haha, you know what I mean,” Joel said.

“Yeah, yeah, but I like getting to pick on you.”

“I like you picking on me.”

“OooOoo, they’re flirting,” Benji said.

“I know, they’re slipping into old habits,” Allie said.

“Oh shut up guys,” I said.

“Yeah, we’re not flirting,” Joel said.

“Ok, we’ll leave you alone,” Benji said.

“Good, cuz we’re not flirting, we’re just friends. Let’s go to the hotel now guys,” Joel said.

We headed to the hotel to check into our rooms and change before the record release party. Even though Benji
said he would leave us alone he kept picking on us saying we were flirting when all we were doing was sitting in
the car. But he was convinced we were sending each other “looks”. Whatever.

“Wow, this place this so cool,” I said as we walked into the club where the party was being held.

“Yeah, I can’t believe we’re at somewhere so cool,” Allie said.

“Well, I hope you two have fun tonight,” Joel said.

Allie and I made a pact that we wouldn’t the other alone, we would either be together or we would be with one of
the guys. We didn’t want to get separated at a big celebrity party.

The party was a lot of fun, we met some new people, including celebrities, and had a few drinks. Afterwards we
went back to the hotel. I was a little tipsy and was clinging to Joel.

“I don’t want to stay with Allie, I want to stay with you,” I said to Joel as we got to the rooms.

“I don’t know. You’re supposed to stay with Allie,” Joel said.

“But I don’t want to. Please Joel, please, please, please.”

“Go ahead, you can stay with her. I’ll stay with Benji,” Allie said.

“Alright, c’mon Hayley, let’s go to bed,” Joel said.

“Ok, night guys,” I said going to the bed.

“Night guys. We’ll be fine,” Joel said.

“Ok, well, you know where we are,” Benji said as they went into the adjoining room.

“Night Hayley, night Joel,” Allie said.

“Hayley, you should change out of your dress before you fall asleep,” Joel said.

“But I don’t want to get up, just come lay with me.”

“Ok, but let me change first. Are you sure you don’t want to change? You’ll be more comfortable.”

“Just take off my shoes please,” I said.

“Ok,” Joel said as he took off my shoes, changed, and laid down on the bed.

“Joel, I really missed you,” I said as I wrapped my arm around him.

“I know, I’ve missed you too Hayle.”

“I missed you calling me that. Nobody else does. I like it when you do.”

“Good. But we should probably get some sleep now,” Joel said.

“Ok, but there’s something I want to do first.”

“What?” he asked.

“This,” I said as I leaned over and kissed him. We kissed for a few moments before I pulled away.

“Wow, Hayley. I wasn’t expecting that. But it was nice.”

“Yeah, it was. I’m going to sleep now. Good night.”

“Good night,” Joel said as we settled down and went to sleep.

The next morning we woke up and just acted like nothing had happened and we were still just friends. The guys
all had some press stuff they had to do so Allie and I went shopping around Times Square.

“Last night was so much fun, wasn’t it?” I asked.

“Yeah, it was. Did anything happen between you and Joel last night? At the party or later?” she asked.

“Um, yeah, kinda.”

“What happened? Hayley you have a boyfriend.”

“We kissed. That’s it. This doesn’t affect my relationship with Ryan.”

“Who initiated it? And yeah it will if he finds out.”

“Uh, I did. But you know I had some to drink and then there’s always gonna be those feelings with Joel, so you
know, it just happened. And I’m not gonna tell Ryan, he doesn’t need to know,” I said.

“Ok, whatever. It’s just I know you promised Ryan that nothing would happen and now something has and I don’t
want him to get hurt.”

“I know, nothing’s going to change. Now can we not talk about this anymore? I’m getting frustrated.”

“Alright, fine. Hey, let’s go in there to eat,” Allie said pointing to an Italian restaurant.

“Yeah, ok.”

We went about the rest of our day without talking about what happened between Joel and I. We went to the guys’
show that night and it was really awesome. We went out to a club to have fun our last night in New York.

Around 2 we went back to the hotel for the night. All of us besides Benji had been drinking, so I wanted to
stay with Joel again. Benji didn’t think it was the smartest idea but he was on the losing side. Before we
went to bed we locked the connecting door between the rooms. When Benji and Allie tried to come and get us the next morning and it was still locked he knew the only reason Joel would lock the door. Let’s just say it was something a girl with a boyfriend shouldn’t do with another a guy.

Ch. 3

We went back home and I knew I had to talk to Ryan. So I decided to call him and get it out of the way.

“Hey Hayley,” Ryan said answering the phone.

“Hey Ryan.”

“Did you have fun in New York?”

“Um, yeah, but actually, I was wondering if you could come over so we could talk about the trip?” I asked.

“Sure, is everything ok?” he asked.

“Yeah, we just need to talk.”

“Ok, I’ll be over in a few.”

Ryan showed a little bit later and I let him inside.

“Hayley, what’s wrong?”

“Um, I broke two promises I gave you before I left for New York,” I started.

“Ok, and what would those be?”

“Well, the first one would be the one about staying in the same room with Allie. I stayed with Joel both

“Hayley, you promised. You said you would stay with Allie.”

“I know, but it just happened.”

“Ok, fine. What was the other promise that you broke?”

“The one where I said things wouldn’t change between us.”

“Something happened between you and Joel?” he asked.

“What happened?”

“I don’t want to tell you because it would only hurt you.”

“Tell me.”

“No Ryan.”

“More or less than we’ve ever done?” he asked.

“Wow. I don’t know how to respond to that.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“I’m sure you didn’t. Does this mean we’re over? Do you want to be with him?”

“I, um, I don’t know.”

“To which question?”

“I don’t think we should stay together Hayley. You guys are meant to be together.”

“Are you sure you want to break up?” I asked.

“No, but I think it’s for the best Hayley. But I want to stay friends.”

“Yeah, I want to stay friends too. I mean, that’s how we started, right?”

“Yeah. It was. I think I’m gonna go now Hayley.”

“Ok, I’ll talk to you later Ryan.”

“Ok, bye,” Ryan said as he left.

I called Joel a little while later to tell him that I had broken up with Ryan.

“Joel, what happened this weekend meant something to me.”

“I know, me too.”

“I want to be with you again. This weekend made me realize how much I missed you and how much I missed being
with you.”

“Me too Hayley. Do you think we can do it with my career?”

“Yeah, I think we can. We survived the first time around. And last time we were the ones that decided we
should take a break since we were going to be apart. We kept in touch for a while.”

“Ok, let’s do this Hayley.”
